Lost

Lake District, England

As landscape photographers, we often chase the shot, hiking for hours, waiting on light, battling the elements. But every now and then, a frame finds us.

This scene didn’t demand effort or planning. It appeared quietly, mid-walk, already resolved. A single dead tree, pale and stripped back, held its position within a dense canopy of autumn colour.

The square frame tightens the view, removing any sense of escape. Warm tones press in from all sides, rich and full, while the tree remains unchanged, its branches exposed and brittle against the surrounding growth. It stands apart without drama, neither dominant nor concealed.

There are multiple readings here. A refusal to blend in. Or the quieter weight of isolation within abundance. Growth happening everywhere, except where the eye is drawn.

The image settles somewhere between those ideas. Not absence, but disconnection. A presence that feels slightly out of time with its surroundings.
